Care & Longevity: How to Keep Your Custom 3D-Printed Gear Looking & Performing Brand New
Share
When you receive a custom 3D-printed accessory, display model, or functional tool, you are holding a piece of precision-manufactured gear. Modern 3D-printed products are durable, lightweight, and tailored to exact specifications—but just like any quality material, knowing how to clean, store, and maintain them makes all the difference in their lifespan.
Here is your straightforward guide to caring for your 3D-printed gear so it continues to perform day in and day out.
1. Mind the Heat (The Dashboard Rule)
The most common mistake people make with 3D-printed items comes down to heat exposure.
- PLA Items (Display Pieces, Desk Organizers): Standard PLA softens at around 55°C–60°C. Never leave PLA gear on a hot car dashboard, near direct heaters, or inside an enclosed vehicle during a warm South African summer.
- PETG, ABS & ASA Items (Outdoor Gear, Mounts, Clips): These materials handle higher temperatures with ease. PETG withstands temperatures up to ~80°C, while ABS and ASA can tolerate up to ~95°C without warping.
Rule of Thumb: If an environment is too hot to hold your hand comfortably against, keep heat-sensitive prints in the shade or indoors.
2. Cleaning & Washing Made Simple
Keeping your functional gear and display items clean doesn't require complex chemicals or specialized treatments.
- For Everyday Dust & Dirt: Wipe down with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft microfiber cloth or soft-bristled brush.
- Avoid Harsh Solvents: Never use acetone, lacquer thinners, or heavy industrial solvents on your prints—especially ABS or PLA—as these can dissolve or compromise the plastic surface.
- Dishwashers: Avoid putting 3D-printed items through a hot dishwasher cycle. High water temperatures during sanitize or dry cycles can cause thin walls and delicate features to deform.
3. UV Light & Outdoor Exposure
If your custom gear stays outdoors—like sporting accessories, vehicle mounts, or hunting gear—ultraviolet (UV) radiation from prolonged sunlight can weaken untreated plastics over time.
- ASA & PETG prints are naturally resistant to UV degradation and moisture.
- PLA or raw unpainted prints left outdoors for long periods may become brittle over time. If your item isn't made from weather-grade plastic, applying a simple clear UV-resistant spray acrylic sealant will preserve both color and structural integrity.
4. Hardware & Threaded Connections
Many functional prints feature threaded inserts, mounting screws, or snap-fit clips.
- Hand-Tighten Only: When securing screws or fasteners into plastic parts, hand-tighten until snug. Avoid over-torquing with power tools, which can strip plastic threads or crack mounting tabs.
- Moving Parts & Friction: For items with sliding lids or moving hinges, applying a tiny drop of silicone-based lubricant keeps mechanisms moving smoothly without attacking the plastic.
The Takeaway
3D-printed products offer incredible utility and custom fit. By keeping them out of extreme heat, cleaning them gently, and respecting their physical limits, your custom pieces will look great and last for years to come.
